Director – Fabrication / BIM
Jeremy brings 15 years of steel fabrication and 14 years of engineering consultancy experience to Tetrad Consulting. His construction industry career started out by fabricating fences and handrails with Eastcoast Steelwork in 1991, before transitioning to structural steel fabrication where he attended to site measure-up of all structural steel work and converting this to completed fabrication and site installation.
Whilst continuing with his steel fabrication career, Jeremy pursued his interest in computers and qualified as a qualified computer technician by attaining a Comp-TIA A+ Computer Technicians Certificate and a Network+ Certificate. Jeremy’s computer training created a career shift from full time steel fabricator to working in the private engineering consultancy with Powell Fenwick Consultants from 2005 to 2007 as an in-house computer IT specialist and Cadet Structural Draughtsperson.
Jeremy’s combined experience a computer specialist and structural draughting provided him the opportunity to join a new structural consultancy in 2008 at Kirk Roberts Consulting. Jeremy’s knowledge of computer systems and server structures was of great value to Kirk Roberts Ltd as the company grew from a regional to national based consultancy.
Jeremy started with KR as a structural draftsperson and after 10 years became an associate at the company and was influential in promoting shop fabrication detailing services by introducing Kirk Roberts Ltd to Tekla Structures Software.
Jeremy’s naturally extroverted nature and focus on client delivery has enabled him to develop enduring working relationships over the years with established contractors, which has allowed him keep abreast of the changing construction scene and improvement on client delivery.
Jeremy’s attention to fabrication detailing combined with an understanding of on-site construction is recognised by contractors who appreciate his understanding of site-specific construction issues whilst improving on construction detailing.
Principle Geotechnical Engineer
Steven is our Geotechnical Expert, and – with 28 years of engineering consultancy experience behind him and having been a 50% founder-shareholder in a previous, successful Christchurch engineering consultancy – he’s our guide and rock! Respected deeply throughout Christchurch and the South Island as one of the best in his field, Tetrad is the richer for his wealth of wise counsel.
His key areas of specialty lie in both shallow and deep foundation design, involving pile and ground-improvement techniques, for either residential or commercial projects.
Qualifying at the University of Canterbury in 1992 with a Bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering, he began his engineering career with a small consultancy in Wellington, practising (at that time) as a structural engineer. 5 years overseas – in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom – added to his professional development, in internationally recognised engineering consultancies.
Returning to New Zealand in 2003, Steven initially continued as a structural design engineer – first for a medium-size Christchurch consultancy firm; and then, three years later, he co-founded Kirk Roberts Ltd. At the same time decided to pursue his love of geotechnical engineering, qualifying in 2009, just one year before the 2010 Christchurch earthquake sequence changed the landscape of the city, permanently.
Whilst many were gripped with uncertainty in the aftermath, Steven focused instead on building a small, skilled and focused geotechnical team at Kirk Roberts, ensuring invaluable reassurance and expertise were easily available for both insurance companies and private property owners, during this cycle of unprecedented change. His previous 12 years as a structural design engineer became critical in understanding the technical interface between structural and geotechnical design during the post-EQ reconstruction – and formed the bedrock of the strategy for Tetrad, bringing a multi-disciplinary team together under one roof, with a ‘zero-silo’ policy and a culture of collaboration.
Steven’s particular gift is in understanding and identifying both structural and geotechnical risk – and how that combined risk can be mitigated and averted by premium engineering designs. Adding astute commercial and business-ownership experience to this professional skill-set, enables him to find design solutions for you as a Tetrad client, that are not simply ‘fit for purpose’, but cost-reducing.
For down-time, social football, walking, and taming his garden all play a part, as well as going through punishing routines designed by his personal gym trainer! Overseas travel is a real love . . . but of course, Covid has curbed that for now! Looking forward to the future!
